What to Expect at Your First Yoga Class

Thinking about trying yoga but not sure where to start? Maybe you've never stepped onto a yoga mat before. Maybe you tried a class years ago and didn't understand half of what was happening. Or maybe you've been telling yourself you'll start yoga when you're more flexible.

Here's the secret: EVERY/body is a yoga body and You don't need to “get in shape” before you start practicing yoga.

At Breathing Room Yoga + Meditation Studio in Hillsboro, we welcome people who are brand new to yoga alongside experienced practitioners.

Do I Need to Be Flexible to practice yoga?

No. (Really!) Yoga isn't a flexibility test, and you don't need to be able to touch your toes, stand on your head, or twist yourself into complicated shapes. Your practice starts with the body you have today.

Teachers can offer modifications, props, and different ways of approaching a posture so you can find an appropriate version for your body.

What Should I Wear to a yoga class?

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move. You don't need expensive yoga clothes. Leggings, shorts, sweatpants, a T-shirt, or whatever you feel comfortable moving in are all fine. Yoga is practiced barefoot so no shoes needed.

What Should I Bring to a yoga class?

A closed-lid (non-glass) water bottle and anything else you like having with you for practice. We have mats and all the yoga props you could ever need available for your use in our Hillsboro studio. Most importantly, bring yourself. exactly as you are.

What Happens in Your First yoga Class?

You'll arrive at the studio with enough time to find us, park, check in and get acquainted with the space, get settled, and set up your space.

Your teacher will guide you and the other guests through the practice and explain what you need to know along the way. You don't have to memorize the poses or know the Sanskrit names.

Which Yoga Class Should a Beginner Take?

There's no single right answer to which yoga class you should start with. We recommend beginning with A slower practice such as Gentle Hatha, Restorative, or Yin can be a comfortable introduction. Hatha can also be a great way to learn foundational postures while still building strength and awareness. If you're curious about Vinyasa or ashtanga, you can absolutely work toward that too. The most important thing is choosing a class that matches your current comfort level.
